Why modern engines require advanced lubrication

Published by: Chevron Technology | 28-Mar-2025

Modern-day engines are a perfect blend of performance and technological innovation, catering to the needs of the hour to reduce the impact on the environment. Over the years, engines have been down-sized while their performance standards have increased to meet the growing industry demand. This has, in turn, led to demand for advanced lubrication solutions that can maintain and protect these engines.

Engines - the powerhouse of vehicles - have evolved from the traditional combustion machines to lightweight, smaller yet more powerful and efficient machines. With increasing regulatory demand to lower emissions caused by engines, technologies like direct fuel injection, turbocharging and hybrid-electric integration have come into being. These help engines emit cleaner vehicle emissions while delivering increased fuel economy. Thus, maintenance of modern-day engines cannot be fulfilled by traditional engine oils or lubricants; they require advanced solutions for better vehicle performance and durability.

Maintaining engine efficiency

Modern engines often employ new technologies to deliver high vehicle performance, resulting in higher operating temperatures and pressures. This makes the engines prone to wear and tear as well as thermal breakdown. Advanced lubrication systems can help prevent these situations while maintaining consistent vehicle performance under severe conditions.

Stringent emission standards

Modern engines use technologies like diesel particulate filters (DPFs), catalytic converters, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems to meet global regulatory standards for emissions. Usage of improper lubrication can lead to damage to these systems. Therefore, it is essential to use advanced lubricants that are specially formulated to protect the emission control systems and the engine parts.

Alternative fuels

As the auto industry moves towards alternative fuels like CNG and bio-fuel to lower carbon emissions, engines face new challenges such as increased oxidation or deposits. These problems can lead to damage to engine parts and lower their efficiency and performance. Advanced lubricants are designed to handle such conditions, thus maintaining engine performance and cleanliness.

Friction reduction

Due to downsizing and tighter tolerances, engines are now built with less space between moving parts. With the use of advanced lubricants, friction can be reduced between these parts to protect components from wear and tear. This results in the engine's durability and the optimization of performance and fuel economy.

Caltex Havoline lubricants

When choosing the right engine oil, brands like Caltex offer a wide range of advanced lubricants that are perfect for modern engines. Formulated using cutting-edge fully synthetic base oils and advanced additive technologies, Caltex's Havoline engine oils stand at the forefront of engine protection and performance. These motor oils incorporate Deposit Shield Technology, which uses special antioxidants and friction modifiers to offer engine protection against heat and other severe conditions.

These lubricants also come with features like water resistance, corrosion protection and engine parts protection. Caltex products are available in the Indian market through a partnership with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).

These advanced lubricants are not just an option but a necessity for modern-day engines that operate under more demanding conditions than ever before. These lubricants ensure durability, efficiency, longevity and protection for engines while helping them comply with regulatory standards.
